Chapter 24

Dren was too worn out by the mining activity to be able to check for iron ore. Instead, he loaded up his cart and headed home. He had felt fine a few hours ago, but after trying to lift a pickaxe again, he realized he was too exhausted to keep going.

That mine posed a unique opportunity for Dren. The place had been abandoned and yet it seemed like it was a functional mine. This pointed towards it being an illegal operation. Getting a license for a mine was a costly ordeal.

It was one thing to own a plot in the Green Court’s land, but it was another to request a mining space. The Green King was no sucker when it came to negotiating mining spaces. The cost of a license was high and required a yearly fee as well.

The easiest solution would be to open the mine up illegally. But Dren wasn’t about to bring that kind of heat on himself. No, he needed to figure out a way to get that mine operational…what about Alliver?

Dren slept the rest of the day and night in his new bedroom, snoring contently for as long as it took for him to recover. He had selected Mana as his stat boost, giving him 4 points to use any sort of magical item.

Marvin was hiding in his bedroom. Dren decided not to tell the tale of the desperate bandits who may indeed have been hired by that bounty hunter fellow. There was no way to tell, as they gave up bringing Dren in for questioning quickly enough.

The artificer decided to head to Alliver’s smithy once more, to talk to the man about plans for a long-term mine. As he made his way up the road, there was a man on a horse riding in his direction. Dren swore silently as he recognized the man as Sheriff Wayne.

“Hold there,” the man said. Surly Jack brayed as Dren halted the cart.

“Can I help you?” Dren asked.

“Word is that Marvin has a bounty on his head, he’s hiding somewhere in the woods. A half-faced man was seen in the area as well, potentially harboring the fugitive. That you?”

Dren didn’t have the ability to lie here. He had a very specific description. “I’ve a workshop a few miles from here,” he confessed. “Some jackass came to my home and accused me of harboring. I told him to come back with the sheriff if he wanted to break my things in search of a magician.”

“Mhmm, and the fact that the footsteps led right to your workshop’s door?” the man asked, folding his arms.

“Look, you don’t have to believe me but a sheriff of Arthursberg has no jurisdiction in the forest, you know that and I don’t. Are you really going to bother the king to get a write of justice when it’s just me in my lab?” Dren asked. He was playing with fire here, but Marvin had already shown his usefulness once. Who knows what spells he could help Dren learn?

The sheriff squinted at Dren.
